First Nations Wildcrafters, BC is very honored to be able to announce that we
have received three business of the year awards.  The awards we received are:

The Mid-Island Science Technology and Innovation Council’s 2011 Agrifood
Business of the Year Award.  The Agri-foods category for the MISTIC Award
was sponsored by the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance.

The Nuu-chah-nulth Economic Development Corporation’s 2011 Best
Environmental and Sustainable Business of the Year Award.

The Nuu-chah-nulth Economic Development Corporation's 2007 Best Cultural
Business of the Year Award.

The NEDC Best Environmental and Sustainable Business and Best Cultural
Business of the Year Awards are especially important to us as the responsible
and ethical aspects of forest management go to the core of what we attempt to
accomplish for the next generations.

Ethical harvesting practices, that are integrated into forest management
planning and operations, are essential for the next era of wild foods as
economic opportunities.

This recognition within the Nuu-chah-nulth community of our work in this area of
forest management, that includes cultural, medicinal, spiritual and other
traditional uses is both humbling and inspiring.  We quite simply could not have
a wild foods business without a healthy forest that holds the abundance to meet
the other needs of the forests and communities prior to any economic benefit of
harvesting and selling products.

It has been very challenging to work towards legitimizing the wild harvested
foods sector.  It has also been very challenging in moving towards having
harvesting and non-timber management accepted as legitimate forest practice
that is respectful of First Nations needs and interests.  It has taken many people
working towards solutions for this step we are now at to have happened.

These awards are recognition that wild foods are a legitimate sector within the
agri-food industry and that the forest management and harvesting of wild
harvested foods and other non-timber products can be done utilizing
environmental and sustainable principles that are culturally appropriate within
First Nations communities.

First Nations Wildcrafters, BC would like to share with you our deepest and
most sincere gratitude to our colleagues, customers, family and community for
helping make both of these business of the year awards possible.

Thank you MISTIC and NEDC for the awesome recognition you have given to
our efforts.
