Alternate Crops and Agroforestry Pilot Framework
Development
Introduction and Invitation to Participate

First Nations Wildcrafters, BC (FN Wildcrafters) has been awarded a contract
with the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands Sustainable Agriculture Branch for
the development of an Alternate Crops Pilot Framework.

You are being sent the below Background and Scope Summary information as
an invitation to participate due to prior expression of interests in Agroforestry
and/or alternate crops economic and resource management development
opportunities.

During the month of January 2010 FN Wildcrafters will be conducting interviews
and seeking input from interested parties.  These parties may include, but are
not limited to, First Nations, agency staff, community members, local
governments, NGOs, producers and non-timber and/or agricultural, and agri-
foods industry members.

It is the intent of the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands Sustainable Agriculture
Branch to utilize this Pilot Framework developed by FN Wildcrafters in their
2010-11 work plans for on the ground pilot operations in recommended sites
for implementation.

Your participation in this Pilot Framework Development is deeply appreciated
and will provide valuable information in regards to Pilot Framework
Development that meets the identified needs.  Contact Keith Hunter with FN
Wildcrafters should you have any further questions and/or if you desire to
participate.  Please feel free to pass this along to others that you feel may be

Pilot Framework Development Background

This project forms one component of an approved Growing Forward work plan.
It falls under the auspices of the Agroforestry and Riparian Management
Program designated as project 2.2.3.3-2. [Part of project 2.2.3.3 Strategic
Environmental Risk Assessment Program; part of 2.2.3 Sustainable Agriculture
Management Program; under FA 5.2.2 Promote Environmentally Responsible
Agriculture]. The goal of the Agroforestry and Riparian Management Program is
to expand the capacity of producers, land managers and technical transfer
personnel; and support the integration of Agroforestry and riparian systems
and related BMPs into agricultural land use options in BC.

Agroforestry products are derived from systems where plants and trees are
managed in an integrated manner. Alternate crops produced under tree
canopies within Agroforestry systems such as shelterbelts, riparian buffers or
forest farming systems fall within this umbrella. Forest farming is one of the five
common temperate Agroforestry systems with application in British Columbia.

Identification and inclusion of forest farming opportunities in land-use planning
activities has the capacity to provide enterprises with management options
which diversify the enterprise products and cash flow, while augmenting a
variety of ecological and social goods and services. This project builds on a
case study conducted through the Greencover TAC program, building on next-
steps recommendations related to identifying and addressing gaps in existing
information and knowledge which limit the adoption of forest farming systems.

Operational field pilots in partnership with agencies, First Nations, producers,
communities and associations are needed in order to derive generalized
operational guidelines and beneficial management practices (BMPs), in addition
to addressing site-specific needs.

This project will develop a common-elements framework for on-the-ground
pilots related to production of alternate crops through Agroforestry forest
farming systems. It will consider the partnerships and activities integral to pilot
development providing recommendations for information which can reasonably
be gathered from operational pilots which address identified gaps.

2. Scope

Poll (hold discussion with and summarize) contacts· engaged/interested in
forest-farming- related practices for key information and potential partnerships
and synergies. Stakeholders may include, but are not limited to, agency staff,
First Nations, community members, local government, NGOs, producers and
industry members.

Determine the linkages with the
Whole Systems· Diversification Model

Develop a Field Pilot Framework: outlining set-up and· information collection
recommendations; identifying challenges; and, providing suggestions for
potential partnerships, processes needed for implementing pilots, who the
collaborators and partners needed are and where in the process they might be
interested in becoming involved.

3. Deliverables

• Organize, facilitate and summarise a focus session for the purposes of
garnering detailed input into the framework, and exploration of potential
synergies and partnerships.

• Technical report and field pilot framework identifying: information gaps, and
extension and tools needs; data collection recommendations to address
identified gaps; process recommendations needed for implementing pilots; and,
suggestions for potential partnerships.

• Summary report of potential linkages and development /delivery partnerships.
